Veterans in iHM Tech: Valued Members of the Team

James | August 22, 2019
Hire Smart. Hire Vets.

Veteran-friendly employer…

We value our Veterans…

Veterans welcome…

I’ve heard all these phrases over the years and it’s becoming more frequent as I get further away from my Army days. This is a good thing, because companies are understanding and valuing what Veterans can bring to the table. However, this isn’t the case across the board, even from those companies that tout one or all the taglines above. In other words, some companies aren’t practicing what they preach.

After being with iHeartMedia and iHeartMedia Tech, I can say wholeheartedly that this company…my company is not just “talking the talk” with respect to valuing Veterans. This quickly became evident when I found out that my whole team, including the iHM CISO, are all Veterans. I later learned that iHM Tech has Veterans scattered throughout many of the other teams. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of the appreciation this company…my company has for Veterans.

I have a small statue of a wolf on my desk that was given to me by the leadership of my last unit. Several people have noticed the statue and read the inscription on the plaque. It's heartwarming to see the positive reactions from my fellow colleagues. It was just as exciting when one iHM Tech employee noticed the orange flag affixed to the statue and introduced himself as a fellow Army Signal Corps Veteran.

I’m proud to tell people where I work and what we do because people don’t think about iHeartMedia's Tech division when they think of iHeartMedia. They think of the app, the radio stations and the music festivals but they don’t realize that iHM Tech is a big part of the engine that makes all those cool things work. I love working here, and I love the culture of iHM Tech.

Most of all, I love the appreciation this company...my company has for those of us that just want to bring our experiences to the table. I can't tell you what it means to be valued in this way. It brings back the sense of pride that we miss from our time in the military.

Some of us have seen and done things that we would rather not talk about. Some of us have lost friends while serving our country. Some of us have scars, both visible and invisible, that aren’t easily healed, but all of us just want to contribute to this company…our company. So, on behalf of all Veterans in iHeartMedia, and iHeartMedia Tech, thank you for letting us once again be a part of something bigger than ourselves and thank you for truly seeing our value.
